Waggin' Tail Ranch sits about 52 miles north of Dallas, which works out to roughly an hour in the truck. We want to be straight with you about that, because it is the whole point. You are not parked in the Metroplex. You are parked in horse country north of Denton, where the sky is wide and the evenings are quiet, and the city is close enough to visit and far enough to leave behind.
So this is not a list of other places to take the rig. Set up once, leave the jacks down, and treat everything below as a day trip you take from your own site, with your dog waiting in a fenced yard when you get back. They are ordered by how far you have to drive, starting with the things you can practically walk to.
Half a mile up the road and down the road
Texas Tulips is 0.6 miles up FM 2931 from the resort entrance. It is the largest tulip farm in the state, you cut your own, and the bloom runs roughly February through April. In season it is the single best reason to be in Pilot Point, and you can see it from your site. Check their current-season dates before you plan a trip around it, because the bloom moves with the weather.
High Point Haven is two miles from the gate, the closest thing on this whole list. Worth a look at their site for current hours and what is on while you are here.
Historic Pilot Point is 6 miles down the road. The courthouse square is genuinely old Texas, with antique shops, local restaurants and a bank building that Hollywood used for the Bonnie and Clyde robbery scene. Lake Ray Roberts State Park is 7.6 miles east, about ten minutes. The Isle du Bois unit has swimming beaches, boat ramps, fishing piers, and mountain-biking and equestrian trails, and the Cross Timbers Trail runs between the two units. Twenty minutes to about an hour
Denton is 18 miles south, about twenty minutes. The historic courthouse square is the best small-city night out in the region: a genuinely good music scene most nights of the week, thirty-odd breweries and bars in walking distance of the square, two universities, and a Saturday farmers market. It is the easiest evening on this list, close enough that nobody has to think hard about the drive home.
Grandscape in The Colony is about 45 minutes, and it is the one that surprises people. Shopping, dining and live music on a scale that does not really exist elsewhere in North Texas. It is also home to Cosm Dallas, an immersive venue along the lines of the Sphere in Las Vegas, at a considerably friendlier price and with a wider range of shows. Sport, concerts and cinematic experiences all run there. Check the schedule before you go.
FC Dallas play at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, about 45 minutes down US-380. Easier parking and a friendlier gate-to-seat walk than the big downtown stadiums, and an afternoon match gets you home well before dark.
WinStar World Casino is about 45 minutes straight up I-35 at Thackerville, just over the Red River in Oklahoma. It is one of the largest casinos in the world, with a concert calendar to match, and it is genuinely closer to the resort than downtown Dallas is.
An hour, give or take
Dallas is about an hour. That is enough for the Dallas Zoo, the Arts District museums, the Perot, Deep Ellum for live music, or a Mavericks or Stars game at the American Airlines Center. Go in for the day, come back to quiet. Our Dallas day-trip guide has the specific drive times venue by venue.
Fort Worth is further west, about an hour and a half, and it is worth the extra half hour for the Stockyards: twice-daily cattle drives, the Cowtown Coliseum, and a stretch of genuine Texas heritage that Dallas cannot match. The Fort Worth Zoo is consistently rated among the best in the country and sits on the same trip.
Choctaw Casino & Resort in Durant, Oklahoma is about an hour and fifteen north. Bigger rooms, a serious concert calendar and a resort complex that is a destination in its own right. Pair it with Lake Texoma on the way up if you want to make a full day of it.
Why base here instead of closer in
The trade is straightforward. Staying in the Metroplex saves you thirty or forty minutes on any one of these drives. Staying here costs you that time and gives you a fully fenced private yard, a dog park with a swimming pond, an agility course, a pool, goats and chickens on the property, and a tulip farm half a mile up the road. It also gives you somewhere quiet to come back to, which after a day at the Stockyards or the zoo is worth more than the half hour.
